Every year hundreds die in preventable outdoor accidents. Your donations make it possible for the North America Outdoor Institute to provide interactive safety education programs for students in 4th through 12th grades and the general public of all ages who live, work or play outdoors. Thank you to everyone that made a donation in 2009. Help us continue our mission to provide practical, life-saving training that saves lives with awareness techniques that are proven effective and easy to learn and use. Together we can make a difference.
From 1950 to 1990, Colorado experienced more than double the number of avalanche-related fatalities as the next
most dangerous state.
In the 90’s, that state developed a program that educated more than 30,000 people in back country avalanche safety courses. During that decade, the number of avalanche-related deaths-per-100,000-of-population declined by 50%. In Alaska during this same period where no public education programs existed, deaths increased by 200%. In 2005 NAOI launched the Be Snow Smart program and deaths have decreased by more than 25%. There is still much work to do. We hope you will join us to continue the effort. |
