From 1950 to 1990, Colorado experienced more than double the number of avalanche-related fatalities as the next most dangerous state.
In the 90´s, that state developed a program that educated more than 30,000 people in back country avalanche safety courses. During that decade, the number of avalanche-related deaths-per-100,000-of-population declined by 50%.
In Alaska during this same period where no public education programs existed, deaths increased by 200%.
In 2005 NAOI launched the Be Snow Smart program and deaths have decreased by more than 25%. There is still much work to do. We hope you will join us to continue the effort.
